Capturing the US embassy, known as the Second Revolution, after the 1957 Revolution of Iran is an important and remarkable event in the history of the Islamic Revolution of Iran. Although a great number of essays and books have been written regarding the issue, this self-reliant student movement has rarely been dealt with from a social movement perspective. Hence, this research is intended to perform a sociological analysis of the capture of the US Embassy in Iran using Smelser's theory of collective behavior. For the evaluation of this theory using historical events, the ways of the United States confrontation with Iran and its influence are investigated. In this way, the researchers analyzed the student movement in capturing the embassy based on Smelser's theory. Accordingly, it can be concluded that the structural contexts (coup d’état of 28 August, (establishment of SAVAK and confrontation with the Islamic Revolution of Iran), structural pressures (supporting separatists), extension of popular beliefs (Imam Khomeini's message on 4 November, 1977 and 1964, and America’s betrayals against Post-revolutionary beliefs), accelerating factors (meeting of the temporary prime minister with the US representative and the admitting Shah by the US), and mobilization of participants (supporting Imam Khomeini's stance) led to the student movement and capturing of the embassy by the students. This is a qualitative research following historical method.
