Introduction:The Ukraine war has emerged as a defining moment in the evolution of the international system, signaling a shift away from the post-Cold War unipolar order toward a more fluid and multipolar structure. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 triggered a profound reconfiguration of global power alignments, exacerbated great power rivalries, and cast doubt on the continued viability of the U.S.-led liberal international order. In this transforming landscape, regional actors like the Islamic Republic of Iran have found themselves confronting a complex mix of new opportunities and looming challenges.
Methods:This study adopts a realist theoretical framework—particularly structural realism—and employs a descriptive-analytical method to examine Iran's strategic positioning within the emerging global order shaped by the Ukraine crisis. The primary research question is: What are the key opportunities and challenges facing Iran in the post-Ukraine global order, and what strategies could best serve Iranian national interests under these new geopolitical conditions? The core hypothesis of this paper posits that Iran, through a balanced, pragmatic, and multipolar foreign policy, can leverage the structural rifts between global powers to enhance its geopolitical weight; however, continued internal instability and overreliance on Eastern powers may convert these opportunities into significant vulnerabilities.
Results and Discussion: The findings suggest that the Ukraine war has catalyzed a realignment of global power, particularly by deepening competition between the United States, Russia, and China. In this context, middle-tier powers like Iran have gained new room to maneuver. Specifically, Iran has managed to strengthen its presence in Eastern-led institutions such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS, and to deepen its strategic partnerships with China and Russia. Additionally, the energy crisis in Europe has rekindled interest in Iran's vast oil and gas reserves, presenting a chance for Tehran to reassert its role in global energy markets. Regionally, Iran has also taken advantage of the changing geopolitical calculus to pursue de-escalation strategies, most notably by restoring diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia through Chinese mediation.
