This article examines the vital link between environmental security and the realization of sustainable peace in the strategic region of the Persian Gulf. Utilizing the Copenhagen School's approach to security studies, it argues that serious environmental threats in the Persian Gulf, including extensive oil pollution, the destruction of sensitive ecosystems, and water resource scarcity, not only threaten the natural life of this waterway but can also become a source of instability, tension, and insecurity among the coastal states. Employing a descriptive-analytical method and relying on library resources, this research analyzes the various dimensions of the Persian Gulf's environmental crisis, assesses the efficacy of existing regional cooperation mechanisms such as the Kuwait Convention (ROPME), and explains the obstacles to convergence. The findings indicate that although legal and institutional frameworks like ROPME have been established, the high level of political tensions, geopolitical rivalries, the interference of extra-regional powers, and the lack of mutual trust have prevented these efforts from being sufficiently effective. Consequently, the present research emphasizes the hypothesis that security studies within the environmental security approach can lead to strategies for sustainable peace and security in the Persian Gulf domain.
